The Center for Scientific Research and Promotion of Culture “HAEMUS” invites you to an interactive exhibition event in honor of the tradition of Martinki, an element of intangible cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List.
📅 Date & Time: February 28, from 10:00 to 18:00
📍 Venue: Europe House Skopje
HAEMUS is the legal bearer of the Martinki tradition at @unesco. For its efforts to safeguard this tradition from oblivion, HAEMUS’ project “The Day of Baba Marta” received the Best European Story Award for 2020, presented by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
As a result of this recognition, HAEMUS created an animated film and educational publications for children and young people about the Martinki tradition, available in Macedonian, English, Albanian, and Turkish. The exhibition will also feature other HAEMUS publications on this tradition, authentic Martinki from different countries as part of the HAEMUS collection, and educational panels in several European languages.
A special emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the Martinki custom, through various interactive activities with visitors.
As part of this educational event, HAEMUS is partnering with:
- Slavica Trchkova from the handicraft studio Craft Time
- Damjan Ristovski and Sara Jakimovska from the brand Narodni Nosii.
The artisans’ works showcase a contemporary interpretation of ancient techniques in making Martinki. Visitors will also have the opportunity to actively participate in creating Martinki themselves and, through hands-on experience, learn more about the history, symbolism, and significance of handmade work as part of Macedonia’s intangible heritage.
Each handmade piece carries its own story and contributes to a sustainable way of life—preserving traditional skills while giving them added value and new meaning.
The author of the exhibition is M.A. Vasilka Dimitrovska, Creative Director of HAEMUS. This interactive event is part of the activities related to the traditional folk ornament Martinki as an element of intangible world cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List.
