HJ Publishing policies

HAEMUS is published periodically in an electronic format. Articles that have been accepted following peer review will be published on the website pages dedicated to the Journal, and may be distributed to other online repositories, such as Scribd.com or the author’s pages on Academia.edu. The editorial policies are defined by the Board of Editors, and applied to the process of manuscript selection by the Board of Reviewers.

The principal criteria for the publication of papers in HAEMUS are that they:
– report original scientific research within the scope of the Journal;
– are of outstanding importance for the study of the history or archaeology of the Balkan Peninsula;
– reach a conclusion of interest to an interdisciplinary readership, as defined in the section About;
– are free of plagiarism or self-plagiarism (the main results and conclusions must not have been published or submitted elsewhere either by the same, or by a different author).

HAEMUS has a Board of Editors consisting of senior, leading scholars, and a Board of Reviewers consisting of either senior or young and aspiring scholars and specialists in a given field. These scholars may be affiliated to a University or another academic institution; however, they participate in the Boards on a personal basis. Thus, their decisions are independent, unbiased by scientific or national prejudices, particular individuals or conflicting interests.

The Journal employs a two-level selection of manuscripts; the decision concerning which papers will be of interest to the academic community is first made by the Board of Reviewers, and then by the Board of Editors.

Upon submission, the co-ordinator of the Board of Editors seeks informal advice on the manuscript from editorial colleagues, who make the initial decision. This decision does not reflect the validity of the work described, or its academic importance. Once the decision has been made to peer-review the paper, the co-ordinator sends the manuscript to at least four members of the Board of Reviewers, who are specialists in that particular field. The number of reviewers ensures that the final assessment of the manuscript will be impartial to the author and their institution, as well as that the review will be concluded fully and fairly. The Reviewers will disclose any professional or commercial competing interests before undertaking to review a manuscript; they will not copy manuscripts or circulate them to un-named colleagues.

HAEMUS has a policy of notifying the author(s) to confirm the receipt of submissions, followed by a review of the said submission by the Board of Reviewers, which is then passed on to the co-ordinator. Decisions by the Board of Editors are made within 7 to 14 days of the receipt of the review. Finally, the author is notified of the Board of Editors’ decision concerning the manuscript – whether it has been accepted for publication without any further changes required; accepted for publication in principle, with additional revisions to be made in response to the report by the Reviewers and Editors; or has been rejected due to a variety of reasons voiced by the Reviewers and Editors.

After a manuscript has been accepted for publication, it is processed and typeset in accordance with the design guidelines of the Journal, and finally, it is published on the website of the Journal, along with all other articles in the issue. Copies of the article are usually uploaded to other repositories, such as Scribd.com, with corresponding key-words and meta-tags.

Before submitting a manuscript for review, please consult the Section for Authors, in order to acquaint yourself with the submission guidelines , the preferred referencing and style, as well as the rights and permissions pertaining to your manuscript.
